Did you know that February is Dental Health Month?! The Little Harpeth Children’s Dentistry Smile Squad would love to help with some tips and tricks to help your child want to brush their teeth.
- Get in the habit of a routine every morning and evening that includes brushing and flossing. If your child is more visual, you can always create a sticker chart that helps once they have completed brushing their teeth.
- Brush your teeth with your child at the same time. Make it fun, set a timer, play music, whatever it takes! We encourage kids to brush but always have a grown up go back behind them to brush and floss to make sure they are clean and healthy. Fun fact: children do not have the proper dexterity to brush and floss efficiently until around age 12.
- Kids love independence, so let them pick out their toothbrush or toothpaste.
- If you struggle with your child not wanting to brush, we recommend using the when & then statement method. An example of that would be something like; When you finish brushing your teeth, then we can play your favorite game.
We always like to remind our patients to drink plenty of water, healthy snacks, and limit sugary foods and drinks to special occasions to help keep your teeth nice and healthy. If you have not scheduled your six month cleaning, call our office today!
