One of the many questions we get is what are dental sealants and why are they recommended. Sealants are clear protective coating that are placed on the back permanent molars to help prevent cavities.

One of the many questions we get from parents are asking what dental sealants are and why they are recommended. Sealants are a clear, protective coating that are placed on the chewing surfaces of the back permanent molars to help prevent cavities. Dental sealants are placed in the grooves and fissures of those permanent teeth. Did you know that anywhere from 80-90% of cavities happen in the grooves and fissures? This is such a large number and one of the many reasons we recommended sealing the back permanent molars as soon as they fully erupt. In fact, dental sealants decrease the percentage of cavities by 86%  after one year. Dental sealants are a painless procedure that help keep our patients smiles remain healthy and happy!
