Hypolastic enamel is enamel that did not develop quite right when the tooth was forming. This simply means that the affected tooth or teeth are at a greater risk for breaking down and getting cavities. The appearance of hypoplasia can vary but typically is chalky, yellow, or brown areas of discoloration. The severity can also vary. It can range from small, and sometimes unoticed spots to areas that cover the entire tooth. Good home care can usually help prolong breakdown.
When we note hypoplastic enamel, we keep a very close eye on it at each routine dental visit and always update you on any changes we may notice.
When it is present on front permanent teeth, we know that aesthetics can come into play--there are things that can be done to fix the discolored appearance, but we wait until the child is done growing and also finished with any needed orthodontics treatment.
